Mother's Day Weekend 2009

This was another great weekend! Saturday morning, we ran through our normal routine (not literally, Daddy still can’t run and Momma has not been running much lately either). But, we did get up and go to the store to buy our weekly necessities. After that we did change it up, because Momma went to the Chiropractor to have him look at her back. Daddy and I took our soda cans to the recycling place so I could make some money for college. I made $7.50 this time! Grandma and Grandpa gave me a whole bag of cans, that certainly did help. When Momma got back, she said that the doctor was going to help her, which we like to hear! We had lunch and I went to bed. Daddy did some yardwork (very light, don’t worry) and Momma took a walk in the neighborhood. Boy does she miss her walks in the neighborhood!

Saturday after my nap we went to a place that sold all wicker furniture and bought Momma her Mother’s Day gift, a porch swing! Momma and the nice man who owns the shop loaded it into van (which is almost as good as the convertible for hauling) and off we went. We stopped by my future elementary school, then went to Jo-Ann Fabric to buy some “room darkening” fabric so Nana could make me shades to keep out the light in the morning. When we got home from that errand, Nana was there! And she came to spend the night too!

When Nana and I were eating dinner (chicken nuggets, lima beans and grapes), JJ and Dan came over. It was very distracting to have so many favorite people in the room, so until they left, I had no interest in dinner. I must be a good hostess and entertain my guests, and I just cannot do that well if I am trying to eat Lima beans too.

Nana and I had a very good time together while Momma, Daddy, JJ and Dan went out for the night. They said they had a good time too. They went to a fancy restaurant called Carlo and Johnny then went to our friend the Griffith’s house. There was a small incident at the restaurant when Daddy told Momma, JJ and Dan that he knew where the surprise trip was. Momma was bummed because she had been working really hard to plan the trip and to keep it quiet all at the same time. Then Daddy’s steak was not very good. At a place like that, the steak should be very good. Luckily, the Griffiths throw great parties and Momma and JJ had some time to strategize about what to do about the trip.

On Sunday, I got up and Nana was still there! Momma, Daddy and I went to church while Nana stayed home to make my curtains. When we got home, I ate lunch and took my nap. When I woke up, Uncle Robbie, Aunt Jeannie, Michael and Uncle David were there to see me! I guess they had a cookout while I was sleeping, but since I was up we got to have the brownie dessert that Momma and I made on Saturday. It was pretty nice outside so Uncle Robbie and Uncle David hung Momma’s new porch swing, Momma, Nana and Aunt Jeannie cleaned up the porch, Uncle David sharpened the lawnmower blade and I rode around on Michael’s shoulders. It was a busy afternoon! After everyone left (I yelled bye and waved over and over again as they all drove away), Momma and I went to get a few things at the grocery. I know, you thought we did that on Saturday. But Momma and Daddy are bargain shoppers and my milk is priced better at Kroger and Daddy only likes the lunchmeat from Kroger, so off we went. I did not want to sit in the cart, so Momma let me push the cart all around the store. I was a very good helper. When she and I came back home, She, Daddy and I went for a walk in the neighborhood! It was really fun to walk with both Momma and Daddy.

May update

I have felt pretty good lately! I still get the “bubbles” every morning and every night. This is not to be confused with “bubbles” in the bath that I get every other night. I can keep them straight, though, so don’t worry. Even though I do like to put the bubbles in bath on my chin like a beard (I do this to Momma too, then I laugh and giggle), and then I like to put them in my mouth. Momma does not laugh or giggle when I do this, but I still do it anyway.

On Monday (May 4), Daddy went back to work. He is recuperating well. I think it is because he did a good job of not doing too much except for walking. When he was off work, he walked almost 80 miles! There are people who don’t walk that much and they never had surgery. Daddy met many people in the neighborhood and they got to watch his recovery as he made his daily walks. That must have been pretty neat to see him make progress everyday. Sometimes I hear Daddy and Momma talk about how neat it is to watch my growth everyday too. I wonder if it was the same idea. I guess that would be the “real” world, huh. Now he even picks me up sometimes. He does not use his grabber as much anymore, but still uses it to play ball with me

This week was also full of surprises. On Tuesday night, Momma had her once-a-month church meeting. This night, Miss Tiffany, my teacher from Infant C came over to play with me! Wow, what a lucky girl I am! On Wednesday you will never guess what happened. Grandma and Papa picked me up from school! You know how much I love Grandma and Papa. They missed me so much that they had to come to visit in the middle of the week. Daddy had a work dinner so I hung out with them and Momma then got my bath (and bubbles, of course).

On Thursday, it got even better because I did not go to school but stayed at home and played with Grandma and Papa all day. Well, not all day. After my 3 hour nap and minor mishap with my diaper (we don’t need to go into details but just know that there was an issue with my pants and my diaper and me handing Grandma poopy that fell on the floor), I went to get my picture taken. It may seem surprising since I love people and being the center of attention, I was not very happy about this photo shoot. They did get a few good poses though, and Momma and Daddy met us at JCPenney’s to pick out a few good pictures. Momma does not take the time to get my picture taken like this so she really appreciates Grandma and Papa taking me (even when I don’t want to pose).

Grandma let me put some make-up on. She put a little blush and lipstick on. I ran over to Momma to show her by putting my head down. I said “make-up on” and she understood what I meant too. Momma has told me that this is a special thing for just me and Grandma but I think I want to put on this stuff more often.

The next morning (Friday), life was kinda back to normal. I woke up with the birds, who are very loud and start talking outside my window just after 6 am (no, I actually do not know the time, but in this is one of the things that Momma helps fill-in for me). I have been saying “Momma” starting at 6:45 or so (again, Momma helps with the exact time). On Friday morning, Grandma and Papa came to get me and I got to spend some time with them before I went to school. I was sad to see them go, but we really made the most out of the time we had. Momma and I believe that life happens in every single minute so you better enjoy them one at a time to make the most of the minutes we have.

May starting off well

Happy May Days to you, Happy May Days to you! Momma and some people at work were just talking the other day about “May Days’ and how they used to have a track and field day during “May Days.” Then they started talking about how kids don’t play red rover or dodgeball anymore and that no one really “wins” in kids’ sports these days. If you didn’t know it, Momma is competitive and thinks that kids need to experience competition because once they are in the “real world” they certainly will. I am not sure what she means by the “real world,” I know there is a show called “Real World” and some people at Momma’s work talk about the “really reallies” but I don’t know how either of these relate to my world. I don’t think she is in touch with my world, does she remember what it is like to not be able to say what you want to say just yet, even though you think you are saying the words for everyone to hear and understand? Feels pretty real to me. Does she remember what it’s like not to be able to do whatever she wants to do whenever she wants to do it? That feels pretty real to me too.

I like May very much so far. May started on a Friday, and I really like Friday’s. It was Daddy’s last day at home and he was a bit stir crazy. Momma left work right on time, picked me up, and we went to the Silver Spring House for dinner. I was a very good girl and colored and colored while I sat on the booster seat in the booth. I did not eat very much dinner but I made a very pretty picture! We played a bit when we got home then I was off to bed.

The next morning, we were back to our normal routine. We got up and went to the store, came back home to play, have lunch, then to bed (still a crib) for my nap. When I got up, my friend Anna came over! Anna is Teresa’s daughter who is about five months older than I am. Teresa is Momma’s very good friend and Kristy’s sister. Anna and Teresa were coming over for a sleepover! It was a little chilly but we played in my backyard and on my swing. Kristy came over and we all had a fun dinner then we played and played! Anna and I took turns pushing each other on the tricycle and I even was practicing “sharing.” I really don’t know what this means but I think it means that I can’t have everything that I want at the exact moment I want it, especially if Anna has the particular thing in her hand at the moment. The next morning we got up really early and went to watch the Flying Pig Marathon. As you know, I have been to this event two times already. The first time I was in Momma’s belly and the next time I went with Nana and Momma. This year Kristy was running half of this marathon and we were there to cheer her on. It was supposed to be really rainy and yucky, but it barely rained and was not that cold. Anna and I were very good girls, got up with no problem (at 6:30 am), ate some breakfast in the van, then ate our snacks in our (matching) strollers as we walked from point to point on the marathon route. As you already know, Momma is an expert marathon cheerer-onner and we saw Kristy at mile 5 then the finish. Kristy’s boys (and my friends) Colin and Patrick came with their Daddy and their Nina and we got to hang out with them too. Once Kristy finished and we were all reunited, we headed home because we were ready for some downtime after the busy morning. Anna and I played and played and played when we got back, then after lunch, we said goodbye. I took a very long nap that day!

Sunday was also Grandma’s birthday. She was not in town this year but I got to call her and tell her happy birthday. That night Momma went to dinner with some of her friends (Erika, Brandi and Mel, plus Mel’s daughter Sophia who has my same birthday but one year later). To my surprise, one of my teachers, Miss Nisha came over to play with me! Daddy is feeling better but he does not want to ‘push it” so Miss Nisha came over to help.

Momma did have a close call on Monday morning. She realized that she left her wallet at the restaurant on Sunday night and of course could not call to hopefully find it until later on Monday. She knew exactly what happened and even remembered thinking that she needed to make sure her wallet was in her purse at dinner. She was holding Sophia and saw the wallet hanging out. Next time she will know better! Daddy was great, and helped her check to see if anyone had used the credit cards and said that he would go pick up the wallet if they found it. After two calls to the restaurant, the very nice manager pulled the booth out and found the wallet! Daddy picked it up and all was well. Momma tried really hard not to get too stressed about the whole situation, what could she really do until the place was open?

These are some of my favorite things (May 2009)

I love ice in my water bottle. The way I say it is “ice in there” all in once phrase, always just like that. If there is not “ice in there” and I want some water, Momma and Daddy know that we need to get to the kitchen to fix it (and put ice in there, of course).

I love to run. I run with great enthusiasm, I bound kinda like Tigger, I am very light on my feet. I am often laughing and giggling when I run too. I have heard that Momma loves to gallop. Maybe someday we will gallop together. I love to push the plastic push Pooh toy and run too. It makes a “rurr” noise and the Pooh and pot of honey turn round and round as I push it. I can make it turn now too, a skill that was quite limiting when I first started.

I love to color! I have the “wonder color” markers by crayola, a wonderful invention indeed! Even though I do like to draw on the windows from time to time, they generally do not make much of a mess. When the caps are on the markers, I run over to Momma (we already discussed the running) and say “stuck, stuck” so she will pull the cap off. Once she does this, I run back to my pink plastic lap tray (that actually just sits on the floor since it is just the right size for me) and color.

My teachers say that I am a very big fan of coloring too. I don’t just color the front of the paper at school, but the back too. They tell Daddy and Momma how I love the daily art projects and am first in line to start. During art class at school, I often will not stop the art project for the other children. There are 10 other kids in my class but in my opinion, my happiness and artistic future is the only thing that matters.

I need to be the center of attention at school. Every day they send home a report and most mornings, Momma takes a few minutes to talk to my teacher, Miss Gina. Momma hears about how I push myself to the very center at “circle time” and how I am the one who gets into the lap of the teacher when it’s time to sit all together.

I am very knowledgeable about the routines at school and usually the first to move when the teacher says that the next activity is coming (especially if it’s art). Some of the other children dawdle around the room, but I am the first in line. I wonder if I inherited this. Am I also destined to work at P&G like Momma and Daddy?

I am very good at my bedtime and morning prayers. I say the prayer along with Momma and Daddy. I say the names of the people in my prayers now too. And I always know when “amen” comes. When I am on my changing table, I point to the prayers so we can say them (there is one for bedtime and one for morning and they are both framed for us to see).

I am a very good eater. I am one of the smallest kids in my class but I eat more than my fair share. My teachers know when I don’t feel well if I do not eat well during the day. For breakfast I eat at home and at school. I usually eat half of a cinnamon-raisin bagel and part of Momma’s egg whites, and sometimes a yogurt and raisins (it depends what Momma is eating that day). Then when I go to school I have a bowl of cereal. This depends on whether my classmates have finished eating or not. If they are finished, then I am not as interested. Throughout the day we get snacks and lunch. I usually eat all of my snacks and most of my lunch. I do not like salad. If this is on the menu for the day, it almost always has a checkmark by the “0%” box. I am not sure why they think this might be a good mean for someone who is just getting all of her teeth.

I don’t always eat very much dinner, which is a tougher subject for Daddy and Momma. I get a snack at school around 5 pm and then there are treats on the way out of school. When we get home, I run to my high chair and yell “eat, eat, eat.” Now that I am taller and stronger, I even start climbing the front of the chair. They make me do this for what seems like a very long time, then finally put me in my chair to eat. Mind you, I have just had a snack at school and usually a small treat on the way home (Momma has tried to cut down on the snack I pick up going out the door by giving me just part of it, which I go along with). I might not be hungry but it feels right to want to eat as soon as I get home. The balance is that I want up, but if dinner is not ready, I think start talking about the food I expect immediately. If I don’t get food, I continue to request it with a very loud voice (in case they can’t hear me). If I get food, I use the technique I learned from Daddy and chip-eating and shove as much food into my mouth at one time as possible. You can imagine my loud voice if they take too long to get me some food. Anyway, by the time they serve dinner and we say grace (I have not learned this prayer as well as my bedtime and morning prayers but am getting very good at saying “Amen” after this one too), I am just about ready to get down. You might call them crazy, but Momma and Daddy want to eat together as a family. Yes, Bella is usually in the kitchen sitting with us or on the chair looking out the window but close by. When I think I am done I pronounce “All done” and start standing up in my chair. Momma and Daddy often ask me first if I went poopy (not the conversation they used to have over dinner, but it’s a whole new world), and if I did not, then tell me that I need to sit there until they are finished. This does not work for me, so I use a louder voice and start squirming until I can get out of my chair. Even if I have the straps around me, I do my very best to get out of the chair. Sometimes they give me something to play with, start singing a song or ask me if I want to eat something else on the table. Sometimes these work and they buy another few minutes. Sometimes it does not work and I cry.
